Abstract

Pitalito, Huila, exhibits significant anthropogenic disturbances in its mountain ecosystems, including loss of vegetation cover, changes in land use, and habitat fragmentation that affect ecological connectivity and threaten the survival of endemic species. The objective of this study was to implement the “Protectores de la Biodiversidad” educational strategy to strengthen environmental education and ecological knowledge and to foster critical thinking among students regarding the care and conservation of the territory’s native species. A qualitative-participatory approach was used to characterize biodiversity, conduct awareness-raising workshops, administer surveys, and develop interactive educational activities. The results indicate a significant increase in students’ motivation, ecological knowledge, and pro-environmental skills to interpret environmental issues in their own context and develop alternatives for environmental protection, stewardship, and conservation. They also show the integration between school-based work and environmental management actions carried out at both the community and institutional levels. It is concluded that contextualized and participatory teaching strategies strengthen the link between education and environmental culture, promoting the internalization of knowledge and the development of attitudes of appreciation, respect, and environmental responsibility; thereby serving as replicable models for biodiversity conservation in Latin American natural contexts.
